LORD of Life

“The Lord is above all who live, yet in the life of all breath; the Lord restores me and revives me” (Isaiah 38:16, my translation).

Live life to the fullest! Grab life by the horns! Live like there’s no tomorrow! I don’t know about you, but sometimes I hear these peppy one-liners and think, you know today I’m kind of tuckered out… I’ll live like there’s no tomorrow tomorrow.

Growing up, all the motivational posters I saw in school featured exceptional people doing incredible things like mountain climbing or cliff-diving or other things that involve extreme heights. Maybe there should be a “Live life to the fullest” poster that features a single dad reading to his daughter or a widowed woman volunteering at a soup kitchen.

Ultimately, only God is exceptional. The Lord is above all who live. No one else even comes close, yet God does not use superiority to create distance from the rest of us. Instead, God’s life-giving, soul-restoring Holy Spirit is generously shared with all who trust in Christ.

So if you want to live life to the fullest without getting elevation sickness, consider spending some time with God today. You might find God at the top of a mountain, but it’s just as likely you’ll find God in the eyes of a child or the smile of a new friend.

Lord God, thank you for making life worth living. Amen.
