“There will be vast authority and endless peace for David’s throne and for his kingdom, establishing and sustaining it with justice and righteousness now and forever. The zeal of the LORD of heavenly forces will do this.” — Isaiah 9:7 CEB
For a moment, she seemed to be moving in slow motion. As Julie walked down the aisle toward me, her husband-to-be, I caught a glimpse of the future. It only lasted a few seconds, but I felt that I was somehow looking at the face of my children’s mother. We were already years, even decades, into our marriage, had already endured all sorts of grown-up challenges, and were still the best of friends.
I think in some small way my little vision was similar to Isaiah’s in the verse above. Initially, the people of Judah saw previews of God’s promises when Hezekiah became king. They enjoyed a good long period of peace, but it was hardly endless.
We Christians anticipate a never-ending era of peace and justice when Jesus returns and his reign is embraced on earth just as it is in heaven. Until then, we relish mere glimpses of the kingdom. A Wisteria tree floats above a quiet cemetery. A child shares a toy with a new friend. A timeless bride smiles in slow motion.
Lord God, thank you for the countless ways that you remind us of your faithfulness. Help us to embody the hope that comes from above even as we dwell in this humble space below. Amen.
