Curse of Comparison

“I also observed that people work hard and become good at what they do only out of mutual envy. This too is pointless, just wind chasing.” — Ecclesiastes 4:4 CEB

I’m not what you’d call a demon in every corner type of guy, but I believe Satan exists, and the proof is his creation of a website— Zillow.com.

If you’re not familiar, Zillow is where you can go to see pretty pictures of homes for sale. Anyone can look at the pictures, few can afford to buy the houses. This seemingly pleasant real estate organization has the dark underworld power to make an otherwise content person feel they are getting society’s short end of the stick.

The wise Teacher of Ecclesiastes recognizes the ancient and enduring evil that is envy. We can waste our lives away trying to “keep up with the Joneses,” obsessing over other people’s attractiveness, popularity, success and money.* In the process we risk neglecting pursuits that cultivate joy and improve the lives of others.

As followers of Jesus, we are called to set aside envy of others and seek the kingdom of God, trusting our needs will be taken care of by our generous Father in heaven. And further trusting that Jesus is preparing a place for us that is way better than that 4 bed, 2 bath with a pool.

Father God, help us appreciate all the ways you continue to bless us, your children. Let our thoughts be formed in your presence, let our hearts overflow with gratitude. Amen.
